Day of - Day before Registration is open for the race this year
Distances: 800m swim, 16mi. bike, 4.4mi. run OR 1.9mi. run, 16mi. bike, 4.4mi. run
Date/location: Sunday August 1, 7:45am Clarkston, Michigan. Downtown Depot town, Clarkston, in Depot park.Click here for directions
Venue/Area Information: Another event that has sold out every year. Again, if you want to race in this great event, for a great cause, do not wait or you will be locked out. This event has amazingly raised over $100k for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society on behalf of the Craig Geenfield memorial and Greenfield family. Thousands of dollars in raffle prizes are donated each year by area merchants along with Cooks dairy farm ice cream cones for everyone. Grilled food for the athletes and beautiful downtown Clarkston make this a great eventyear in and year out. Click here forarea information.
Course:Deer lake has historically been 80 plus, this is an in the water start due to the shallow waters. A simple rectangle course, down, across 25m and back. You have about a 600m run up to the transition area from the swim, you may bring your shoes down to the swim for the run up to the transition area. The bike is a 2 loop out and back course and the main reason there is a cap on this event of 350. It is a fast, smooth bike coursethat is lined with local residents much of the way. The run course is also two loops around depot park and the downtown Clarkston area. Flat and mostly on sidewalks.
Race Tips: Again, with a capped race that sells out you don't want to get caught in the masses so whatever you need to do to seperate yourself from that is the key to a fast race. That can start with the swim, hug that inside line, basically rubbing your elbow against those buoys. Don't dilly dally around getting up to the transition area either. The bike is fast and you can make it easier on yourself being very vocal out there. The louder you are on the bike the less you have to worry about slower traffic. You could lose 2 plus minutes per lap if you get stuck behind slower athletes making their turnarounds. The run course could be cut in two sections, high motivation at the front, recover on the back. So use the electricity at the high motivation heavily populated front end to your advantage.
Packet Pickup/Registration: Day Before Saturday at the park 4:00 - 6:00pm. Day of Packet Pickup and Registration Sunday 5:45 - 7:00am ONLY. Do not arrive late. Registration will close. It is about a 10 minute walk to the lake from the transition area.
Multi-Sport 101: NO MULTI-SPORT 101 for this event due to the late setup time on Saturday
Transition Area: Open at 5:45am closes at 7:15am. This is a European style racking format, one long rack on either side of the road. First come, first serve for this event. No Friends or Family members allowed in the transition area for any reason. The race director and race officials will close the transition area 30-45 minutes before race start to ensure all athletes are at starting lines for mandatory course meetings and announcements. Once the transition area is closed you will not be permitted back in before the race starts. Family members will not be premitted in for any reason. In the event of inclement weather it is recommended you have warm, dry clothing outside the transition area to put on following your finish due to other athletes still being on the bike course. Thank you for your cooperation in following these rules. ***Please remember each 10' section of rack will hold 7 bikes racking with seat tip on support bar. This is EUROPEAN STYLE RACKING, meaning one long rack on each side of the street. Please be courteous to fellow athletes to ensure there is space for 7 per section. Any athletes removing gear from transition areas before the announcer or race director has officially opened the transition area will be DISQUALIFIED from the race! No questions asked, your race number will be taken down and you will be disqualified. The transitionarea is closed until all athletes are off the bike course. Sprint athletes this goes for you as well, you must wait until all the athletes are off the course and race officials open the transition area. All athletes deserve a clear transition. There will be an aid station at the run in/out chute with water and electrolyte replacement. Athletes wearing their own chips, PLEASE remove your chips before re-entering the transition area and exiting again. This can cause a timing error. Run in/out and Bike in/out chutes are clearly marked on the large structures at either end, it is your responsibility to go the right direction.
Swim: 800m -Wave one starts at 7:45am. An in the water start, straight out, keeping the buoys on your right, to a right turn, across about 25m and back in. Wave starts will be postedon Sunday at Packet Pickup/registration.
water temp as of: 7.29, 82 degrees
Bike: 16mi. -The bike course is basically a one road course, out and back 2 times. Exiting the transition area you will head RIGHT taking White Lake until it becomes Holcomb, to the turnaround point. Then head back to the turnaround before Depot Park. After completing 2 laps you will make a Left into Depot Park, down the small hill to T-2. CAUTION: As you can imagine with 350 athletes on an 8 mi. out and back stretch of road, basically in downtown Clarkston, the road can become a bit congested. YOU MUST STAY TO THE RIGHT AT ALL TIMES unless you are passing.Communication on this course is a must to ensure proper passing is available.
***Remember this is an open course! You will be sharing the road with vehicular traffic. Use caution at all times. It will be your responsibility to print maps, and know the courses. It is the athlete's responsibility to know and understand the courses. Helmets are a must. No helmet - no race. MP3 players on the bike course are an automatic disqualification. Due to a few athletes actions in the past during an event we are making you aware not only in this event but ALL events whether hosted by us or any other event management company YOU MUST OBEY ALL OFFICIALS and EMERGENCY VEHICLES on the course AT ALL TIMES!! The bottom line here is your race is not more important than an EMERGENCY or OFFICIAL on the course. In the event of an emergency you MUST obey officials requests, and you MUST STOP and pull off the road for any and all EMERGENCY VEHICLES to get by. This is not only to ensure the emergency vehicles can proceed, it is for your safety as well. Any athlete that does not adhere to this rule will be disqualified and will not race in a 3 d event for the rest of the year. This to us is common sense and should not have ever came to this point.
Run: 4.4mi. - Exiting the transition area at Depot park you will complete two laps. You will follow the black topped path around the downtown area running past the transition area two full times before turning into the finish chute just before lap 3. You will simply follow the cones and support crew on a all Leftturn course. The run course is mainly flat to slightly rolling and pretty fast. Water and Eletrolyte replacement at mile 1 and just before the transition area.
Duathlete Run 1: 1.9mi. run, Startingin the road in front ofthe beach you willmake one loop ofthe course, heading into the transition area.
COURSE MAPS: Swim/Bike/Run Transition Area
Relays: At registration you will receive ONE bib number and ONE chip/strap. The bib number goes on the runner as that is who will be crossing the finish line. All relay members must be body marked with that number. The Chip/Strap will be securely fastened around the person competing in the first discipline. There will be a designated spot for All Relays at one of the entry/exit points in the transition area marked RELAYS. All staging and chip/strap exchanging is to be done at this point. Not on the course. The Chip/Strap must be securely fastened to each athletes ankle, do not grab it and go, do not put it on the wrist. Upon finishing it is the last athletes responsibility to return that chip/strap at the finish line. (one athlete may do more than one discipline)
Finish/Awards: After you have returned your chip and strap you will proceed to the post race snack tent for refreshments. Raffle and Awards will begin AFTER the last person finishes. If you chose to leave event management will not be responsible in any way for mailing your award or raffle prize. ****You may click here to print awards form and mail in a check for $10 within 2 weeks after the event to get your award mailed to you.
